MICD Assistant Professor Daya Raj Subedi Co-Authors Study on Ecosystem Perceptions in Himalayas

A new study titled "Diverse Perceptions of Ecosystem (dis)services in a Himalayan Protected Area" has been published in Environmental and Sustainability Indicators. The research, co-authored by Assistant Professor Daya Raj Subedi from MICD's academic faculty, explores how protected areas generate ecological benefits globally while local communities often bear the brunt of negative ecological impacts, leading to perceived injustices.

This collaborative research effort brought together scholars from Nepal, the Netherlands, China, and Germany, with Assistant Professor Subedi playing a leading role.

Key Highlights from the Study:

  • Regulating and supporting ecosystem services are identified as particularly significant.
  • The study notes that while ecosystem services extend beyond local scales, disservices primarily remain a local experience.
  • Perceptions of ecosystem (dis)services are found to be deeply rooted in lived experiences and socio-economic contexts.
  • The research emphasizes the need for localized solutions and specific indicators for ecosystem disservices in conservation efforts.
